Verena Issel
Verena Issel (* 1982) lives and works in Berlin. The German-Norwegian artist studied Fine Art at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou (China), and the Faculdade de Belas Artes in Lisbon (Portugal), as well as Classical Philology at the University of Hamburg. She was a visiting professor at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg and is Professor of Fine Art at the Brandenburg University of Technology. Artist-in-residence programmes have taken her to Finland, Russia, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico, Iran, Lithuania, and Papua New Guinea.
Her spatial installations and works across a range of media often appear humorous, yet they carry a socially critical subtext. Both the themes she addresses and the form and materials of her installations respond precisely to the specific exhibition context. Issel has won several competitions and realised public art projects in Lübeck, Erlangen, and Munich.
Issel has received numerous grants and awards, most recently the Lothar Fischer Prize. Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at institutions including Kunsthalle Mannheim, Museum Lothar Fischer, Bundeskunsthalle (Studio), Zarya Center for Contemporary Art, Trafo Kunsthall (Norway), Haus am Lützowplatz (Berlin), Kunstverein Leipzig, Kunstpalais Erlangen, and Westfälischer Kunstverein. Her work has also been shown at Kunsthalle Nürnberg and KAI10 / Arthena Foundation in Düsseldorf. This year she is participating in the Manifesta Ruhr Biennial.

Ihre Rauminstallationen und Arbeiten in unterschiedlichsten Medien wirken oft humorvoll, besitzen jedoch einen gesellschaftskritischen Subtext. Sowohl ihre Themen als auch Gestalt und Material ihrer Installationen reagieren präzise auf das jeweilige Ausstellungsumfeld. Issel gewann Wettbewerbe und realisierte Kunst-am-Bau-Projekte in Lübeck, Erlangen und München.
Verena Issel erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien und Preise, zuletzt den Lothar-Fischer-Preis. Einzelausstellungen ihrer Arbeiten zeigten unter anderem die Kunsthalle Mannheim, das Museum Lothar Fischer, die Bundeskunsthalle (Studio), das Zarya Center for Contemporary Art, die Trafo Kunsthall (Norwegen), das Haus am Lützowplatz (Berlin), der Kunstverein Leipzig, das Kunstpalais Erlangen sowie der Westfälische Kunstverein. Arbeiten von ihr wurden außerdem in der Kunsthalle Nürnberg und in der KAI10 / Arthena Foundation in Düsseldorf präsentiert. In diesem Jahr nimmt sie an der Biennale Manifesta Ruhr teil.
